A Thai soldier pours water onto flowers placed in the hand of a slain colleague shot dead in an attack by suspected separatist militants on March 21, during a Buddhist ceremony at a temple in Thailand's restive southern province of Narathiwat on March 22. 2011. Shadowy Islamic militants have waged an uprising in Thailand's southernmost region bordering Malaysia since early 2004, leaving more than 4,400 people dead, including both Muslims and Buddhists. Violence has recently intensified in the region, where critics accuse the government of failing to address the grievances of Thailand's Malay Muslim minority, including alleged abuses by the military.
